I.
Sunrise in another
Anonymous city
In another
Anonymous hotel. Anonymous
And cold, a stranger
With resentful eyes that
Follows me as
I attempt
To place my mark
On unforgiving décor.
I can hear
The creaks within
The walls, the
Muffled voices outside
The door. Of lives
Continuing on, selfish
And uncaring of
What's outside their
Sight. I can smell
Freshly laundered sheets, sterile
And clean, sterile
Like the painting that
Looks down upon
The too-large bed.
Empty and static.
No life.
No color.
But then nothing's had color since you went away.
II.
The beach is beautiful
The waves a clear grey, speckled
With white foam, lapping
At the shore and
My toes with
Eager licks. The breeze
Barely stirs the air
But I can taste
The sea salt, smell the
Brine, and the scent
Reminds me
Of your skin.
When you see
The beach, do you
Think of me
Sometimes? Do you
Remember the sunrise
Christening our
Kisses with gold? Do you
Remember digging your toes
In warm sand and looking
Over the waves
As we poured our
Souls to each
Other, with the
Ocean keeping our
Secrets, carefully
Hoarding each touch
For further reflection?
III.
When you lie
Upon your sheets in your
Too-large bed in your anonymous
Hotel room, do you
Remember the haven we'd
Created within walls, within
Ourselves, a place so wondrous
And pure that no one
Could breach?
If those walls had
Stories to tell, what
Would ours be? What
Message would we write
For those who come after, full
Of their own drama
And conflict, what message
Would we give
To make them pause? I could
Share the secret of your
Laugh, but I think I'll
Keep it for myself. I'm
Not too old
To be selfish.
IV.
I stare
At the canvas, at
The white, the
Blank void, and
I can see the shadow
Of your hip, the curve
And indention, freshly marked
From my fingers, a secret
That only I know.
I used to know all your secrets.
